Why it works
Intelligible speech is language, not noise
A murmur gets filed as background; a conversation you can follow gets read along with. That is why focus collapses suddenly in cafés. Instrumental music pushes speech back down into murmur.
Don’t stack music on music
If the shop’s own playlist is loud, headphones are the only answer. Two pieces of music layered become noise twice over.
How to use it
Only as loud as the talking. Just past the point where speech stops forming sentences. Louder and the music is the new problem.
Pick the seat first. Away from the door and the counter beats any playlist.
Noise cancelling plus very quiet music. Together you can run at a far lower volume.
When to turn it off
If you are trying to memorise or read something hard in a café, move instead. No music rescues that combination.
