Honestly — music is not a substitute for sleep. But when drowsiness is mixed with boredom, music can take the boredom half.

Why it works
Boredom and sleepiness are different problems
If a dull task is what is dragging you down, music helps a lot. If you are short on sleep, nothing you play keeps your eyes open. Work out which one you have first.
Move the tempo up
When you are sleepy, gentle lo-fi works against you. Go faster than usual and one notch louder.
How to use it
Stand up and walk first. Two minutes of walking beats any track. Music is for after you sit back down.
Don’t put hard work in this slot. Park the routine tasks in your afternoon dip; that is where music pairs well.
A twenty-minute nap is fastest. Play the music after it, not instead of it.
When to turn it off
Never use music to push through drowsiness while driving. Nothing you play is a countermeasure for that.
Questions
Combine it with coffee?
Start a routine task with music during the twenty minutes before caffeine kicks in, and you ride through the dip.
Can I just keep playing wake-up music?
It works at first and then you habituate. The arousal effect does not last.
